Greens all over the United Kingdom are celebrating the news that party leader Caroline Lucas has won her seat in Brighton Pavilion.
The Green Party of Canada congratulates Caroline Lucas on her historic victory, and the voters who chose to support a party with genuinely progressive views on economic, social, and environmental issues.
Canadian Greens also have reason to celebrate. The UK Greens' breakthrough shows that electing Green MPs is possible, even under a regressive first-past-the-post voting system.
Said Canadian party leader Elizabeth May, "Caroline Lucas' historic victory proves that Greens can win despite the first-past-the post system. The UK has been the only nation in Europe where Greens had been shut out. All the others have proportional representation. There are lessons here for Canada. As Green leader I will win my seat as well."
Elizabeth will be running in the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands in the next Canadian election. Please help her achieve victory by making a donation or volunteering for phone canvassing.
With your support, Canada can also have a Green voice in Parliament.
