Most people think about firsts. First step, first word, first man on the moon, frst black president. Randy Crow thinks about lasts. Last breath, last words, last time, last president before the impending social collapse, last man alive.
He didn't think much of it when he wandered into the annual corn maze of the Harvest Fair, he guessed this would be the last fair due to the lack of funding. When he stepped into the maze the lights from the lamps of the fair disappeared and the long stalks of corn rustled around him like a flock of birds. He looked back at the entrance and almost walked back out, but his feet carried him around the corner and he knew that he had to keep going. He spotted a group of kids his age stumble around laughing, their drinks drinks sloshing around splashing there shoes with a sickly sweet odor. He stuffed his hands in his pocket and followed them.
After a couple of minutes he heard the first scream. He stopped and looked around losing sight of of the crowd of kids and finding himself alone in the quite and the dark. Randy Crow isn't scared of the dark or the quite, he enjoyed both of them in fact.
He heard another scream, deeper this time. A few seconds later he heard a low rumbling voice "Braaiiiins!" it said. He almost laugheed, "What is this a joke?". Suddenly an arm shot through the corn wall, pale and rotten. He screamed. The hand had popped out right where he was about to step. Randy ran accompanied by the sound of more screams and calls for "Braaainnnss!!". "What the hell is going on?" he thought. He was on the ground, he had run into something, he squeezed his eyes shut, something that smelled of rotting meat. He started to crawl away daring not to open his eyes when something cold grabbed his leg. His eyes shot open. Zombie!! He struggled to get free but to no avail. He opened his mouth and out came his last and first word..."Braaiins!!"
