Current Conditions Saturday, March 31, 2007

+3'c daytime and -3'c at night and lots of snow around 8 ft at 3400 ft Quanset hut area. Great sunny day and hardly anybody up there. Thanks to CNI logging east of lot A there is a great panoramic veiw of gulf islands and over to nanaimo and up to comox. 1km east over towards the Bowl. Guess they are going to build the next British propertys. Great veiw. Road over from B&K had some traffic come from B&K side but still to much snow to go up the hill. Have fun don't forget the sunscreen and Hat. Even though it is cool you can get sun burnt.

Fresh dusting on ElphinstoneFresh dusting on Elphinstone
Current Conditions Sunday, April 01, 2007

A brief disturbance blew over Mt Elphinstone an hour ago, covered her in clouds for 1/2 hour and left a beautiful light dusting of snow. The snow level is low enough that the clear cut on branch 3 was snowed upon.

A beautiful sight.

Please Call SCRD and ask what plans are for next yearPlease Call SCRD and ask what plans are for next year
Alert / Warning Monday, April 02, 2007

We need to get the SCRD moving on getting things happening for next year or there might not be any ski area. We need funding for the road to be improved and for better grooming next year. We need thongs done before the snow flys. Ask if the road is going to be driveable to The ski area or is it going to be 3 kms of hiking still.

It is less then 3 years to the Olympics and a great chance to have people can and ski on our mountins as cross country in cypress will be impossible for 2-3 months. Lets not miss the Boat again. Get the ball rolling lets see the plans go ahead. We have snow up there 6 months of the year. Lets get some use ouut of it. We were promised a ski are with day lodge and groomed trails where the H*** is it.
Lets get the ball moving.

End of season for plowingEnd of season for plowing
Alert / Warning Monday, April 02, 2007

Like to thank Sunshinecoast Snow Seekers Snow Mobile club for there support in keeping roads Plowed. And also Dakota Ridge Winter Rec Society and The Tet Outdoor club. I will not be Plowing Next Year so suggest you talk to SCRD and find out what is going to happen for next year. Hopefully Something is in works to plow the roads, but don't hold your breath.

The coast needs some leadership for Winter recreation, our mountains are also used for spring and summer hikes etc.
Don't Forget the Rat Race happens in May. Lots of good Bike trails have been put in by Volunteers for bike riding in the hills.

Current Conditions Tuesday, April 03, 2007

last night - April 2 - we headed up to the ridge at 8pm- the sunset at 7.45 and the moon rose over Keats Island at 8.13 - the skies were clear and we had fresh snow. what a gorgeous place we live in. after a tour up to 'the warming hut' we checked Caven's thermometer which read -6. as we made our way down it was a little icy below 'the gate' and we had to contend with atv tracks. still a beautiful evening all around.

Current Conditions Friday, April 06, 2007

Was around +6'c at noon today, lows have been down to -5'c. Still 6 feet or more of compact snow on trails at 3300ft level. There were around 7 vehicles up there at noon and a few had left already.
Great Spring conditions. Some bare spots in first 300 ft of trail up. Good skiing conditions.
Do not try to drive up past Lot B as there are new cross ditches all the way up, if your 4x4 goes into 1 of them you will get stuck. Please do not drive up leave trail for skiers for as long as possible.

Dakota Ridge Bunny HillDakota Ridge Bunny Hill
Alert / Warning Friday, April 20, 2007

I've been hiking/snowshoeing/ski touring on Dakota Ridge for 4 years now and was extremely delighted to find the very wide/open hill to the East of the hut! For some reason I've always headed along the ridge or to the West and didn't know we had a nice wide bunny hill to play around on. I'm new to skiing/ski touring and still need lots of work on my parallel turns. I can do this here all day if I want - in the sun and with a nice view of the back end of the West ridge of Elphie.

How to get there: At the hut head right until you hit the obvious open hill, and then head up (making note of where the snow bridges are that cross the drainages); alternatively, head straight up from the hut for about 15 minutes and look for the old green and white ski signs off to your Right. There's still loads of snow to ski/board/shoe. I'm on touring gear with skins, so I can go anywhere. I don't know how skiers on skinny, scaled, cross country gear will find this terrain - I think it's doable in the right conditions (and when the track setter's been around).
I hear our fantastic plower Caven is selling his plowing rig (Unimog) and is getting out of the volunteer plowing business. Who will replace this awesome means to our backcountry access? He's been plowing our 3 main backcountry roads - Grey Creek, Dakota Creek, and B+K logging road - for a while now (mostly out of the goodness of his heart - though I know he wants access to the backcountry in order to snowmobile and ski himself). Next year if he's not out there first thing in the AM, who will be?
