Dakota Ridge Bunny Hill
Location Review/Description Friday, April 20, 2007
I've been hiking/snowshoeing/ski touring on Dakota Ridge for 4 years now and was extremely delighted to find the very wide/open hill to the East of the hut! For some reason I've always headed along the ridge or to the West and didn't know we had a nice wide bunny hill to play around on. I'm new to skiing/ski touring and still need lots of work on my parallel turns. I can do this here all day if I want - in the sun and with a nice view of the back end of the West ridge of Elphie.

How to get there: At the hut head right until you hit the obvious open hill, and then head up (making note of where the snow bridges are that cross the drainages); alternatively, head straight up from the hut for about 15 minutes and look for the old green and white ski signs off to your Right. There's still loads of snow to ski/board/shoe. I'm on touring gear with skins, so I can go anywhere. I don't know how skiers on skinny, scaled, cross country gear will find this terrain - I think it's doable in the right conditions (and when the track setter's been around).
I hear our fantastic plower Caven is selling his plowing rig (Unimog) and is getting out of the volunteer plowing business. Who will replace this awesome means to our backcountry access? He's been plowing our 3 main backcountry roads - Grey Creek, Dakota Creek, and B+K logging road - for a while now (mostly out of the goodness of his heart - though I know he wants access to the backcountry in order to snowmobile and ski himself). Next year if he's not out there first thing in the AM, who will be?

Alert / Warning Sunday, May 06, 2007

As I use both the Tet And dakota, I think it would be a good idea to raise money to keep both roads plowed. It would be a shame to not have plowed roads to our best snow areas. I heard Caven is selling his truck and will not be doing ether road next year. If Caven does not plow who will. Anybody have any ideas or info on if roads will be plowed next year. Love to hear any news. Maybe the Tet and Dakota clubs should get together and work on some road works. Any brite ideas.

Dakota just got down from skiingDakota just got down from skiing
Current Conditions Friday, May 25, 2007

May 25th and was cross country skiing on Dakota Ridge. Hard to believe. The snow was almost gone to gate had to drive through some patches but got to gate. Snow starts about 800 ft past gate with a 200 ft bare spot half way up. But then solid snow all way to top. I was amazed how much snow is still there. It seems around 3 ft still near the Quanset Hut. No way you can drive up there for some time. It was a great afternoon of skiing. Will be real nice when you can drive a car to top in winter. Trail is getting lots of brush growing in on it. Not very often you can ski in shorts.

Question: Appropriate footwear for the TetQuestion: Appropriate footwear for the Tet
Current Conditions Tuesday, May 29, 2007

The Outdoor Club is getting some questions about hiking in the Tet. Does anyone know if good hiking boots will suffice at this point, or are snow shoes still a good idea, given current snow conditions?

Or does it depend specifically on where you're going (ie, hiking boots good most places; snow shoes or skis recommended for Steele)?
