Who painted the art work at dakotaCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 06, 2008Just wondering who painted the art work on that wooden box in the warm up hut. Does anyone know what that big box is for or what it does. Is there a troll that lives in there. Why build such a big warm up hut and build a big wooded box in it. Found it kind of funny and wastefull.
Heard rumors they are going to be charging for skiing up there this year. Hope they can keep the quads off the trails this year. Well maybe by xmas we will know what is really going to happen up there.
Posted by: Sean
muralCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 06, 2008The mural in the quanset hut was painted by the students of the alternative school from Pender Harbour. The box was origanally framed to protect the plumbing of the proposed indoor bathrooms. Plans have changed and future use of the box is undecided for the moment. Maybe use as a first-aid station by the volunteer ski patrol.
Fees will be charged this year. Proposed fees are:$10 for adults $5 for 13-18 and $20 for family
let it snow!

Dakota FeesCurrent Conditions Friday, November 07, 2008Are they going to have a seasons pass. Where will will pay for trail fees. I will not mind paying if things are better then Last year. Are they going to plow and sand the road.
Our van ended going in ditch and then got hit by another car coming down hill. Seems if they are going to charge they had better sand the road.
If you go up there make sure you have collision on your vehicle. We did not and it cost us. With more people going up there this year the road could be more dangerous. Road is Narrow and people drive to fast. We got put in ditch because of someone coming down hill way to fast and ran us into ditch and they kept going down out of control.
Sand the Road.

I see SCRD posted fees on websiteCurrent Conditions Friday, November 07, 2008$100 for season pass $10 for day and they going to charge for snow shoeing. I can snow shoe anywhere else for free. If they are chargeing they better start sanding the road too. I am no Lawyer but if they charge you to ski then they have some liabilty if you get hurt up there. If they say some of the money is going for road and they do not sand and I go in the ditch who pays.
If they are charging the level or service better improve. Grooming on the weekend was great but middle of week was poor or none. Before I buy a season pass I would want to know are they going to groom during xmas break. Is there going to be grooming every sat and sunday for sure. Has the RD got a 4 wheel drive tow truck to pull people out who get stuck. As far as I know no tow trucks will go up there to pull you out.
So if we are paying to use the road and trails should there not be some better service provided. I know that the ambulance and fire depts won't go up there. So if there is a accident with 2 or more cars and people hurt who will go and help.
Maybe the RD should have a emergency plan. Maybe they do already and have not told anyone.
The road is use at own risk. Take extra gear you could get stuck up there over night if there are cars in the ditch and can not get by.

No worrys no snow up there nowCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 08, 2008Give it a rest anything is better then last year. It will be getting to crowded up there any ways. Looks like it will be atleast 1 month before we get snow to ski anyway. Not having to walk up hill for 2.5 kms is worth it. I heard they did road work the road should be wider now from Lot B to top.
Look forward to skiing this year. any word about the ice rink up there. How many cars will be able to park up top. Hate to go all way up and no room to park.
I heard there were plans for a web cam to be set up there, that would be cool. Lets wait and see what happens.
Hopefully the road will be driveable in future in a 2 wheel drive vehicle or is it just going to be people in 4x4s that can use the area. Not everyone can afford a 4x4.

The yellow gate at the lower parking lot is now locked, and the wooden pallets have been positioned in the crossditches beyond.

Is the road going to be sandedCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 13, 2008Dakota ridge road has it been widened seems to me it was only wide enough for a ski trail up from parking lot last season. It seemed narrow to ski on with the ditch on both sides. I can not imagine driving up it with snow on it. Unless it is sanded. I hope they post road conditions on here when they get running.
Look forward to a good ski season
Posted by: S Obrian
yeah it has been widenedCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 13, 2008the road has been upgraded this year and will be drivable all the way to the top

Road to Dakota almost same as last yearCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 13, 2008Unless they have made it wider it last 2 weeks it is just about the same as last year. They have made some wide spots to pass here and there. But the road from Lot B area up almost seems more narrow. The ditches look deeper and road is no wider. Hope everyone has skinny cars. I would think 4x4 with good WINTER tires would be required and even chains. The ditches are on both sides of the road. I sure would not want to slide into ditch. I heard 2 years ago a GMC 4x4 pick up truck got stuck in ditch and had to hire a excavator to come pull him out.
If kids tobogan down the road and make ice it will be suicide to drive up there.
I tried to buy chains at Canadian tire and they are sold out best get yours soon.

No Snow on Dakota RidgeCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 15, 2008Seems it is still to warm, Maybe we will get cooler temps soon. Less then 30 days before opening days on ski hills.
Hope we get some snow soon. Kind of seems weird we still have not even had a heavy frost yet.
Maybe we should all think of doing some ride share for Dakota ridge. So many people do not have 4x4s and those that do might have room to take others up. Maybe we could have a ride share stop at RD office. There is also a rideshare link on this website.

Snow On Dakota RidgeAlert / Warning Saturday, November 22, 2008Be Prepared for snow if you go up to the Ridge today. Could be anywhere from 2-4 inches of the white stuff. Don't forget the Snow chains if you are going up the hill.
Need more people doing the snow dance.

7 inches of snow at Quanset hutCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 22, 2008Yes that is right 7 inches. Some POOP Head has turned the outhouse at Lot B on it side and beat the crap out of it. Looks like they took a axe to the front of it. May the curse of a thousand pooping seagulls land on your head.
The road from Lot A up has loose rock on it so it is like drivine on ball bearings. From lot B up the snow starts Do not take low clearance vehicles past lot B as water bars in road are sharp and you could drag through them.

Dakota Ridge VandalismCurrent Conditions Sunday, November 23, 2008Well do not count on using the wood stove the brain deads have smashed the glass in. They have also tried driving up and down steep bank uphill of the smaller Quanset hut. They could have lost control and drove into it. Then over in the big Oval for trail head they have made a mud pit and chewed it up. Atleast doing all that stuff I do not think they had time to chew up the trails.
Why would anyone smash the front glass on the wood stove. Kind of wrecks it for everyone else.
Was realy nice up there today snow was great.
Please write down license Plates of anyone you see doing Havoc up there.
We went up in a all wheel drive Van and dragged the trailer hitch through the ditches. Guess they do not want us to drive up there or something. The kids had fun but they need a tubing hill up there. We used to tube on the road above the parking lot. Guess we cant do that anymore.
Next weekend should have lots of snow up there.
Looks like snow for all this week up there.

Morons visit Dakota RidgeCurrent Conditions Sunday, November 23, 2008Went up there today to have a look, maybe ski and discovered quite a mess,a group of idiots have been four wheeling on all the trails I looked at,chewing up everything, they took the splitting maul from the hut broke the glass out of the stove then took that to the outhouse door and busted up the toilet.Unbelievable ignorance and stupidity.Maybe the gate should be locked at night,if they have to walk more than 100 feet from their trucks there may not be any more vandalism.

Driving winter roads Like DakotaCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 27, 2008It is important to use your headlights on logging roads so others can see you coming. Slow down as roads are narrow and there may not be enough room to pass unless 1 vehicle stops.
Carry chains and do not be afraid to use them they could save you a all day of being stuck in a ditch or worse. Test your traction, if you hit the brakes and slide on level ground covered in snow it is time to chain up before going up hill. DO NOT STOP in middle of the road to chain up as other vehicles may be coming to fast to stop. It is very dangerous when a vehicle spins out on a hill then others can not stop.
Good idea to carry some sand, jumper cables, snow shovel and dirt shovel , blankets and other emergency supplies.
There is a 30 kmph speed limit on the road to Dakota Ridge.
Watch for people walking dogs on lower part and do not let kids slide on the road surface.
Instead call the SCRD and ask for a sliding area at Dakota Ridge.
Have a safe winter and be safe.

Raining on Dakota Snow meltingCurrent Conditions Friday, November 28, 2008Whistler is open but it is even warm up there. Where is our cold weather. Seems it is just 1-2' to warm for snow. Just wet for now. Hope they catch those idiots tipping out houses. Someone must have seen them.

Snow chains for driving Dakota RidgeCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 29, 2008The best and easiest chains to get are Alpine or Diamond back Chains. They can be put on easy without moving the vehicle and have great traction. The chain has a diamond pattern to it and the chain has square sides to bite in for traction. They come in a small carry bag for easy storage.
Order yours in now save the hasle of being stuck in the ditch. Rubber and ice do not mix use chains.

Good ChainsCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 29, 2008I have a set of these chains, and they are the best chains I've ever used. They can be a bit fiddly to mount and dismount, but nothing like traditional chains. Practice at home, and packing a pair of rubberized gloves helps a lot.
The chains have excellent grip. They are strong enough short of doing something crude like spinning the wheels on gravel. They cost more than old-fashioned chains, but are well worth it.
Posted by: Sgrant
Alpine Chain SourceCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 29, 2008I forgot to mention that I got the chains at Canadian Tire. Probably any of the auto supply places have them, plus lots of on-line stores.
Posted by: Sgrant
Chains get them atCurrent Conditions Sunday, November 30, 2008Kenmacs in Gibsons, Napa in Sechelt or Canadian tire. They are more expencive but well worth it. As they are easy to put on and off. Even the best snow tire can not match the traction of chains.
Still to warm for snow up top. Some colder air is coming Tuesday but might be drier.
