Dakota Road in good shape as of late afternoon WednesdayDakota Road in good shape as of late afternoon Wednesday
Current Conditions Wednesday, December 31, 2008

Grader/plow was up there all day. The road is in pretty good condition, probably the best it's been all year, especially to Lot B and to the two large parking/turnaround areas between it and the lot at the hut. Beyond the upper parking/turnaround area it's quite narrow and cars meeting each other will have to make a careful negotiation. Chains a must, lots of ice everywhere, especially lower down. Major ditches have been marked by wands. Pullouts between Lot B and hut have been enlarged.

Hardly anyone up there today, probably all scared off by bad road reports. It's not that the road doesn't have its difficulties, but if you have chains and some competence, slow down and don't make any sudden moves, you should be OK. And then there are the idiots who make it difficult and dangerous for everyone - hopefully you don't meet them on your way up or down. This is the crap-shoot. But even idiots don't want to end up in the ditch or wreck their vehicles.

4 Low, mostly shifting between 2nd and 3rd, has worked well so far. Let the gears and engine maintain the speed, not your braking foot. Lights on, eyeballs peeled. What else can you do?

Tet road plowed wellTet road plowed well
Current Conditions Friday, January 02, 2009

-12'c at parking lot at 7am. now new snow since yesterday.
Use chains and spread your tracks out. This will help prevent ruts and makes it easier to plow. No way you will go in ditch on this road road is plowed so there are snow birms almost as strong as concrete. Take shovels both snow and incase you have to dig out or dog a safe parking spot. Please park back as far as possible parking lot is small and in order to plow we need room.

Have a safe trip

Current Conditions Friday, January 02, 2009

just got home from a day trip up Grey Creek to Tet parking lot and beyond skiing. The condition of this road is the best I have seen it. The clearing job with pullouts is absolutely first class. You deserve a gold medal award.

We chained up as most vehicles are doing. Very safe as long as you take it easy. Some kids sliding on the road around 8 km.

As for the skiing just imagine the stuff skiers dream about!
It doesn't get any better. Great snowshoeing too.
Watch out if you go deeper into the backcountry. The pack is very unstable.

enjoy

Dakota road sure is not plowed as goodDakota road sure is not plowed as good
Alert / Warning Friday, January 02, 2009

You sure have to watch your self on the road to Dakota. The edge of the road is very close to where it is plowed. My truck with chains on all 4 wheels started going for ditch when I pulled over to make room for another SUV with out chains. I managed to just get out because I had chains on all 4 wheels. I won:t be pulling over for any one any more I will stop in middle of road till they stop. If the don:t have chains they won't be going any farther.
I was up the Tet a few days ago what a differance in the way the to roads are plowed. I feel far safer driving the Tet road. What does that guy use to plow a Sherman tank. I go up there alot for years and I have never ever seen anyone plowing it just seems to happen. Kind of like the Saquatch, Has any one seen who plows the road.
Why can they not plow the Dakota road as well as the Tet. Way to go Snow man who ever you are. Whats your secret maybe tell the guy on Dakota ridge.
Maybe one day we will see you at work.

No I do not use a Sherm tank close a UNIMOG. It is purpose built for snow plowing. I will include a picture. I mostly go up to plow at 4 or 5 am. You may see the big Snow blower up there sometime it was up there last season. Take care.

Even though road well plowed still use 1 set of chains helps break up the ice for plowing. I hate to see people going up hill without chains spinning there wheels.

Have a good new year.

Trace of new snow -5'c at lot 10am only 1 jeep came up by 11 am. where is everyone. I heard the parking lot was packed yesterday. Take Care have fun USE CHAINS. Lots safer even though road is well plowed. Only takes 1 rut to get you stuck. Using chains will help break up ice on road and spread tracks will pack down the width of the road. Some girls got a ride up with some guy in Pick up truck dec 26th he had now chains it was a scary ride. Coming down even more so after idiots have been sliding down Suicide hill. Guess they feel safe with concrete guard rails.
If you find any parts to my truck let me know. Metal pins from plow and exhaust parts large 3 inch stuff.
Take care have fun.
If you use the Tet you should join the Tet outdoor club. They are the ones making it possible to keep road open. $12 a year and you can always donate more for plowing costs.

Stay safe.

WARNING SLEDDING ON ROADWARNING SLEDDING ON ROAD
Alert / Warning Saturday, January 03, 2009

SLEDDING DOWN GRAY CREEK ROAD IS VERY DANGEROUS. There were many kids with there parents letting them slide down the Gray creek logging road. If you do not know there was a young kid killed in Coquitlam last week sliding down hill in a gated Community.
Snow boarding down road is very dangerous and towing boarders behind vehicles is even worse. We do not need any accidents or should I say child abuse on this road. This is Foolish and very dangerous behavior. I ask anyone seeing anyone doing this to write down License plate numbers and desription of vehicles and date time etc.
It is not just dangerous for kids sliding down the Road but also the other vehicles that could slide off the road or hit a child.
You would not let your kids slide down Davis bay hill so why do it on a logging road.
Stop this dangerous and foolish activty before someone gets hurt.

Gray Creek Road in good shapeGray Creek Road in good shape
Current Conditions Sunday, January 04, 2009

The road is very well plowed. As of 4pm yesterday there was 2 to 3 inches of fresh overtop of the plowed surface. Everyone we saw had 4x4/chains and were spreading their tracks out very well so the new snow was not an issue. Very slippery - chains a must! The lower 3 km down to Sechelt Inlet road, was the slickest and the sledders didn't help much. We spoke to two lads with crazy carpets about not using the road as a toboggan run...

Current Conditions Sunday, January 04, 2009

Morning- January 3- Road was in great shape for vehicles with 4X4 and chains. Driving slowly makes such a difference if you do meet another vehicle.

Road was opened up again to the Quonset hut.
Incredible snow with grooming.

Morning January 4-
Road clear again (we drove only to Lot A). We went sledding on the great hill at LOT A. Well off the road and a perfect sled track already set. Snow falling all morning. Awesome.

Great day for skiing, snowshoeing or just sledding with your kids.

Current Conditions Monday, January 05, 2009

I went in on Jan 3rd and caught a ride up to the parking lot with the Snowman (thank you!!) then came out on Jan 4th. I was skiing out and the road was slick (the edges on my new skis barely worked!). There was about 6 inches of powder on top of the ploughed road. Road is ploughed well, but chains are a must because of the slick ice in sections. Drivers were spreading out their tracks well. There were about 6 trucks parked at the parking lot. Drive slowly in case skiers/snowshoer's are coming out/going in. If you see someone on the road, give a honk to warn them! :o) I had, yet again, a great time! Cheers!

The plow was up early Sunday morning moving the 12 inches of fresh snow from Saturday. Parking areas are enlarged, pullouts more defined. Looks like grooming and track setting was done on most trails. Snowshoe routes are marked. Driving was no problem with chains, especially in the afternoon when many vehicles with chains shredded the icy sections. Looks like snowmobilers are using the parking area just before the upper lot. Close to 20 vehicles at upper lot mid afternoon.

Tet Road difficultiesTet Road difficulties
Current Conditions Monday, January 12, 2009

Cavin our volunteer backcountry road plower recently had part of a tree go through his rad when he tried to plow the Tet road. He is on his own for repairs to his vehicle in this kind of situation. Theoretically the SCRD, the Tet Club, MOF, and BC Parks have hammered out somewhat of a plan for maintaining the road and maintaining winter access but it's (understandably) going to be a LOW BUDGET/ LOW PRIORITY/ VOLUNTEER/ SHARED USE/ TRIAL/ HOPEFUL effort. And it's not just about funding. People who really care about access have to get involved in working out how that access is established and maintained. Otherwise the only folks who will be able to access the backcountry are those with snowmobiles and ATVs. (And for those of you who use the waterways you are probably looking at the same access issues as the coastline gets clogged with private docks, high tide retaining walls, and fish farms.)

Forget about complaining to the RD. Join any of the user groups and start talking and planning. People who volunteer to do a job can often get more done than those who get paid to do that job. Passion trumps $$$.

Tet ski day ruined by stupid parkingTet ski day ruined by stupid parking
Alert / Warning Monday, January 12, 2009

We planned on going on a short ski trip in the Tet but thanks to Half wits stupid parking job we only got just past the Bridge. This Moron blocked the road so none of us could drive any farther. We all had chains on and were ready to go but this idiot had his fancy Ford F-150 truck with out chains on and just parked where he felt he could. This Moron even drove his truck into snow bank so snow was through his grill.
We saw snowmobile ramps in the back of his truck so we gather it was some Jerk that went skidooing.
Did this jerk not think what would happen if someone was hurt in the park and needed to get to a hospital. I wish the guy with the snow plow was there and just push the f150 in to the ditch. I know lots of people that skidoo and most are not so brainless.
There was only 1 vehicle parked in that parking area with chains on and it was the snow plow. How do these guys think they are better then us to drive up a ice covered road towing trailers with out chains. And then 1 of them blocks off all access to the Tet park. Here are some pictures of the foolish selfish Moron that parks in middle of the road.
May he come back to flat tires and a dead battery. we would have put sugar in his gas tank but ran out of it for our coffees. If we had eggs we could have egged his nice pretty truck.
Watch out for this Moron he could be dangerous if he had a brain.

Dakota road is rutted down to gravel with water running down tracks Temp was +10'c Yes that is right a inversion layer has made spring like conditions up there. Sunny and Clear To warm for making trails worked up a sweet shoveling snow.
All of Georgia Strait was covered in a blanket of fog. Only a few vehicles up there today.
Some school kids were up snow shoeing I gather.

Kind of funny Tet is cold and Dakota warm.

Watch for the STUPID water bars on both roads. They get deeper with thaw.
There are only 4 spots to pull over and let people pass from lot B up. Atleast only 4 that are plowed safe enough to risk. DO NOT pull over unless you check out the road for ditch as many spots are looking good to drive on but infact the ditch is waiting to swallow your car.
Road is Narrow and not plowed as wide as road is.
Use caution and common sense or it could cost you big dollars.

Tet road has heavy iceTet road has heavy ice
Alert / Warning Sunday, January 25, 2009

Just because I made lite of the fact you could end up sliding down the hill backwards like the Jamacan Bob sled team DO NOT think it is not serious.
A few years ago some fool took his 2 kids for a drive in the snow up behind the Mine end of Mason road. He was going up a hill with out chains on and started sliding backwards. Then the truck went sideways sliding down the hill untill it caight some gravel under snow and flipped a full size Dodge 4x4 pick up like a kids play toy.
Things go wrong fast and ice will speed up your heart rate.
Take the road seriously, It is not a bob sled run or ride.
If everyone chains up it will help break up the ice and you are prepared for the ride down.
We do not need anyone getting hurt up there, it would take all the enjoyment of plowing the road for me.
Road could get worse with fresh snow on top of Ice. Chain up at 400 turn off.
NO Cable Chains they are useless in most ice and snow conditions we get, they tend to come apart and take out brake lines. Alpine or Diamond back chains are the best.
If only wanting to chain 1 axle make it the front, all steering and most braking is on the front. The chains on front will help give traction to rears abit. But if you chain the rear the front tires with out chains will ice up any snow and make harder work for rears.
Studded tires will not help up there nore will the best snow tire Use chains. Alpine chains only take about 1 min a wheel to put on.

Tet Road access and fools that use itTet Road access and fools that use it
Current Conditions Sunday, January 25, 2009

I can not believe the idiots that would go up to the Tet with out chains on. 1 Jerk slid 30 ft before being able to stop on level ground. We said he should have chains on he said he had studded tires. What a joke like studded tires are useless in that type of road conditions. Some people were smart and parked and hiked up because they did not have chains.

Why can people not think about what risk they are putting other people in by not chaining up. I heard that the plow guy said if people continue to go up with out chaining up he will stop plowing the road. I can see his point, if I were him I would plow a big snow bank in the middle of the road to stop everyone. He would save lots of money by not plowing. Then there was some lady in a japenese right had drive truck running her dog beside her truck then parks in middle of the road to put her dog in truck. Great way to kill a dog having them run beside your truck on a sheet of ice you can not walk on.
Is there a sign at the bottom of the hill that says leave your brains here.
People use the Brains and chain up above the pullout past the bridge.
I have lost all interest in driving up there when fools run loose.
The plow guy said if he sees just 1 more truck go up with out chains he will stop plowing for this year, so wise up and do not wreck it for all of us.
If you stopped and tried to walk up hill on the ice you would not drive on it.
Maybe the plow guy should have plowed all the snow over the bank so fools would disapear.
Just my 2 cents worth. Road is good some drivers are bad.

The ski conditions in the Tet are terrible. Everything is a thick layer of ice. We decided to not end up with a bunch of bruises and to Bobsled on the road instead. Yeeeeeeha. Had a great time. With a bit of work we can make the track from the upper parking lot all the way to branch 400. Looking forward to next weekends run. I have decided to change my snow tires to all seasons for next weekends run/event. Buckle up! The banked corner at 8.2km was great backwards. The kids really had a good time. Don't forget to turn off your airbags!

Tet RoadTet Road
Alert / Warning Monday, January 26, 2009

Just for your info if you get stuck up on the Tet road and have to get someone to come pull you out it could cost upto $1000. So before you think about going up with out Chains think twice. The snow banks are hard but if you slide down hill fast and hard your vehicle could end up over the bank.
You are on your own up there no emergency services will be able to come help. Think twice before playing on the road.
Tet Road is use at own risk. ICBC might not cover damage caused off road.

Think about the other vehicles coming at you or behind you when you loose control.

Dakota Ridge should have trace new snowDakota Ridge should have trace new snow
Current Conditions Tuesday, January 27, 2009

From al reports from other mountains there should be a trace of new snow on Dakota. Probaly 5cms and cold at -7'c. In the next 7 days there could be 20-30 cms of snow coming to Dakota and Tet.
If you go up to out local mountains please post some current info as we do not have web cams or full time staff up there.
The only way this site works is if people like you that go up the hill post info when they can. It takes only a few minutes. if you can not post it call me at 741-4152 and I will post it.
Looks windy and lots of clouds over Dakota Ridge today.
Have fun in the snow.

Current Conditions Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Only 2-3 inches new snow and -6'c was down to -12'c at night.

took skidoo out west and pulled groomer to fix quad tracks in trail out west. Can only go about 2km and there is a big cross ditch opened up. Will try to build a ice bridge when more snow comes. Still lots of ice on road under the little snow we had. Do not get to thinking it is great driving as ice will get the best of you. Chains and spread your tracks stay out of the ruts.
Only 5 or so vehicles up there today.

Wed night ski should be good.

The Quad tracks I fixed are on the west trail to WFPs clear cut. I have been groming a trail out west for people that like to ski on level ground and prefer to ski in the open.
This is the perfect area for sunrise and sunset pictures of all georgia Strait. you can see the sothern gulf islands and up to Comox on a clear day.

Dakota road speed trapDakota road speed trap
Alert / Warning Friday, January 30, 2009

I just heard they were giving out tickets for speeding on the road to Dakota Ridge. They were also looking for quads driving up the road. Seems quads are not allowed to drive on a road with posted speed limit and other cars on it. Quads are only allowed on roads other veichles can not drive on. Guess there is a big push to slow traffic down on dakota road before someone gets hurt. Watch your Speed.
