SNOW on Dakota Ridge! Saturday Nov. 7Current Conditions Saturday, November 07, 2009Here comes winter... snow begins at Lot B on the road up to Dakota with 15 cm found on the ground at the Quanset Hut. 4X4 or AWD needed to drive the last 1.5 km based on current conditions. Temps later this week looks cold- so we could see more...
Thanks to the volunteers that worked so hard on insulating the hut- should be a lot warmer this winter.
Skis and Snowshoes are in stock and ready to go! Visit our new store at the base of Dakota at the Wilson Creek Plaza.

These guys thought chains cost to muchCurrent Conditions Sunday, November 08, 2009Even 2 inches of snow can put you in the ditch Chains are the best safety thing you can USE. You can be the Best driver with Best tires but ICE and compact snow will make a simple drive a night mare. Get Diamond Back or Alpine chains they are easy to put on like 2 minutes and you are going. Even studded winter tires are no match for snow covered back roads.

Dakota Ridge - Nov. 8Current Conditions Sunday, November 08, 2009More snow continued to fall on Dakota Today. Snow line begins at Lot B with approx 20 - 30 cm of snow up near the Quanset Hut. Take note- the gate just below the Quanset Hut is locked- leaving minimal parking. Drive carefully - especially on the snow covered portions of the road.
Nice to see some keen folks out skiing!

Uncle Bob says get chainsCurrent Conditions Tuesday, November 10, 2009These chains are easy to put on and give great traction on back country roads. Very easy to put on about 2 mins for each axle. Even the best winter tires will not give you the safety of chains. Just think if you have to stop on a hill covered in compact snow and ice going up to Dakota.
Please buy and use chains for your safety and everyones, road is narrow.

When is opening day for DakotaCurrent Conditions Wednesday, November 11, 2009Is there any word when Dakota Ridge will be open for Winter season. And when will it be closing. I see they still have not hired someone to plow the road. Is it true they will be only plowing till end of Feb. What about spring break in mid march. We should have more then 2 1/2 months of trail use.
Hope there is some info about Dakota Soon.

DakotaCurrent Conditions Wednesday, November 11, 2009I'm sure it will open when there is enough consistent snow and will stay open as long as funds permit....so everyone please pay for passes..it keeps the road plowed longer...and keeps the volunteer groomers machine full of diesel!
Think SNOW!!

Dakota Ridge - Nov. 14Current Conditions Saturday, November 14, 2009The snowline has come down a fair bit this week- leaving some great snow accumulations on Dakota Ridge. The snowline starts just below Lot A- with significant snow on the road at lot B. Deep ruts are forming on the road above lot B- use caution.
Some folks are tobogganing on the road at the steep section on the road (at the old yellow gate) above lot B. This is creating VERY slippery conditions.
Chains with 4X4 recommended above lot B.
Over 3 ft of snow measured up top on Dakota Ridge today- with heavy snow falling as we went skiing.

Good News Freezing level coming downCurrent Conditions Monday, November 16, 2009The pineapple express must have shifted the high temps that were predicted have not happened. Freezing level should be around 1200-900 mts Just about right for lots of snow on Dakota. Road may be iced up Use chains. Tow trucks won:t go up to help you and if they do it will cost you alot more then Chains would cost.

Great place for pics & infoCurrent Conditions Monday, November 16, 2009If you have images of the Tet or Dakota Ridge and want to share them, drop by the social networking site for the coast (our own little Facebook) at bigpacific.org.
It's always good to know about access - any information about scheduled trips by quad or similar vehicles would be welcome for those of us without 4x4 and seemingly total lack of skill installing purchased chains!

Dakota RidgeCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 19, 2009Needed chains just past Lot A could not make it around corner at Lot B got stuck and had to back down. Rain and wet snow Yuk..
No fun having to try to ski up the rutted trail road etc. Guess we are back to were we were 4 years ago for now. Sure miss the plowed road

Lots of Snow coming to higher elavationsCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 19, 2009Mt Washington had 80cms in 24 hours In the next 5 days there could be alot of snow at 2500 ft and up Would not try driving past Lot B at Dakota any longer.
Snow is water logged and deep slimmy snow plugs tires and chains.

roadCurrent Conditions Friday, November 20, 2009the reason the road is not being plowed as of yet is most likely funding. There is only so much to go around and if they started plowing early...they would stop plowing earlier! When it finially opens please pay trail fees...it helps keep this thing going! Volunteers put tons of hours in to make this place work but we still need money to plow road and fuel snow cat.

Dakota - Nov. 21Current Conditions Saturday, November 21, 2009It is snowing again on Dakota. Snowline begins just below lot a. The road had some plowing done on Friday- but travel above lot b should only be considered with chains.
Gate was still locked.
Freezing level looks to be low enough for a big dump of snow for the next few days.
Snowshoe and light touring ski rentals are now available at our new store in Wilson Creek. Open 7 days a week.

RoadCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 21, 2009The road was plowed with a grader up to the hut.It is very sloppy as it was not graded to the dirt. There are places where the crusty/slushy stuff is over 8 inches deep and you will break through it.I was stuck just below the upper gate in that stuff and put on chains then to get out. Do not attempt it without chains, and dont get too close to the sides as the you can't tell where the ditch is. Was snowing heavy when I left and the rain changed to snow at the 5 km sign, snow on road above lot A but I am sure there will be a lot more below that after tonight. There are no pullouts above lot B ,so pray you dont meet anyone going the other way and if you do ,get out and check for the ditch before you pass or one of you might go in it.

Tet Mt Steele 7 ft snow 1 ft at parking lotCurrent Conditions Sunday, November 22, 20091 ft snow at Parking lot 7 ft at Mt Steele they had 1 1/2 ft new on Sat night. Mt Steele cabin is much more comfortable thanks to all the work the Volunteers did. No more Drafts and new woodstove and windows.
Please if you go up to Tet please post a report here to let others know how things are.
Please chain up and try to spread your tracks as Snow plow is still in the shop being repaired. Only way road will stay open is if you chain up and spread tracks out. Pack the whole road down to make a ice road.
Remember Tow trucks will not go up there you are on your own, shovels, chains for all 4 wheels, tow rope etc.
Cabin use fees and Tet memberships help pay for upkeep on Cabins etc. You can always give more if you can help. check out the Tetoutdoor.ca website great pics and info.

Sechelt Weather station back onlineCurrent Conditions Thursday, November 26, 2009For last few days our local weather station was offline just got back online today. So our weather forecasts should be getting better. Lets hope we can keep the weather station here after the Olympics. It was to be just a tempory station for the Olympics but hopefully it will stay for good. In previous years all temps for Sechelt came from Point Atkinson in west Vancouver.

If you go up to Tet or Dakota please post infoCurrent Conditions Friday, November 27, 2009This site is quick and easy to post info and up to 3 pics. It helps others plan trips Things like snow depth, new snow, temp raining or snowing , where snow starts, how the road is etc. Take pics and post them great to see pics of trails with people on them.
Warnings such as lakes and ponds are not frozen beware of level areas. Like last week someone walked on to what they thought was just a level part of trail and feel into water.
This site works best if everyone can try to post info after they have been up.
Sometimes the only way the plow operator will know there is fresh snow to plow is by reading this site. If you want the road plowed post info.
Pic from last year
Thanks.

Alpine forecast back on Mt seymour websiteCurrent Conditions Saturday, November 28, 2009Just check Mt seymour webpage for weather and click on Alpine forecast.
Also Enviroment Canada website has weather fore cypress listed under 2010 and south west Venues. Gives you readings for around 20 sites that affect Whistler and alpine weather including Sechelt ,Cypress, Mt Washington etc.
Heard rumours the road above Lot B to Dakota has been blocked by large pile of snow. If you have any current info please post it here.
Reminder get chains if you plan on going up to Dakota or Tet Much safer and will save you countless hours compared to being stuck in ditch. Alpine chains only take 2 mins or less to put on. around $150 a set get 2 sets to be safe cheaper then repairs or tow truck bill.
Road is narrow and you may have to stop to let others by or stop beacause kids have been slidding down road and iced it up. 2 mins to chain up versus hours stuck in ditch.
Be safe use chains.
