Alert / Warning Monday, February 01, 2010

A heads up that a Pender Harbour outdoor ed class will be up at Edward's cabin on Feb 13th - 14th. Not sure of the exact numbers however expect the cabin to be full.

Still need snowStill need snow
Current Conditions Monday, February 01, 2010

On Sunday the groomers played with what snow was available to make the Eastern trails on the Ridge skiable. The Western main trail is groomed for 1km and that's it - dead end in the dirt.
We still need snow but you can have fun skiing on the Eastern side. The snowshoe trails have a few 'dry' spots too.

The road is open but the last 1km up to the top is muddy and rutted. Try and stay out of the ruts and spread the muck around.

If you have 4x4 please use it: it's easier on the road.

Alert / Warning Wednesday, February 03, 2010

A minor correction to my previous post - on the weekend of February 13th & 14th the Edwards cabin will be occupied by a group of people taking an avalanche awareness course, and the outdoor ed class mentioned previously will be at the Batchelor Cabin. As far as I know Steele & McNair are open.

Current Conditions Thursday, February 04, 2010

Seven of us went night skiing on the Ridge last night. A few centimetres of fresh snow on top of the previous day's grooming made for very forgiving conditions.
A little foggy with light snow falling and not much moon but still enjoyable.
Road holding up well.

Current Conditions Friday, February 05, 2010

That is what was falling from the sky on Dakota Ridge this morning. Wet, gloppy, sloppy, mushy, wet oobleck.
Hard for the groomers to moved around with the tiller, and even harder to skate ski in. You definitely don't have to worry about holding back on the downhill runs. The western loop that goes across the bottom of the dog leg is now open and skiable but a little dirty. The road is holding its own.
Patrick & Michel are working at filling holes with pallets.
Bring a shovel up with you on Saturday.

Cabin useCabin use
Alert / Warning Thursday, February 11, 2010

Both Batchelor cabin and McNair, as well as the Queonset hut at Dakota, have seen an increase in use by the younger crowd. While this is a good thing in general, what is NOT apreciatted, are the leftover socks and underwear, as well as the condom wrappers. Bachelor cabin will be visited by the cabin stewards over the Feb. 13,14th.,to see that cleanup is done and cabin fees paid. I believe that McNair will be checked as well. Thanks for your co-operation, Doug House and Lloyd Mager, Tet outdoor club.

Alert / Warning Friday, February 12, 2010

Just a reminder that the Pender Harbour Secondary Outdoor Ed class will be doing a trip to Bachelor cabin this weekend. As Edwards is full with the avalanche course, we're hoping others might use Steele or postpone their trips to Bachelor in favour of another weekend as the logistics to organize a school trip make rescheduling difficult. Thank you.

Hey Jeff, I think there's plenty of wood for this weekend, but it is getting low. We were not up this past weekend,so I cannot say for sure what is there. We did a quick clean of the table and counter and some pots but do a good wash first before using the pots for water or food. That was two weeks ago.We might be up for a hike on Sunday, so if we run into your group you can fill us in on conditions.Doug and Lloyd.

Lack of snow...Lack of snow...
Current Conditions Monday, February 15, 2010

Due to the lack of snow on our local mountains we (the sunshinecoast snow seekers)[local snowmobile club]have had to travel to areas other than our local hills, its has been a very good season otherwise. A very big disapointment for local riding. Not looking forward to the very dry summer we'll have, conserve you water...Not much snow pack up there.

Tetrahedron ConditionsTetrahedron Conditions
Current Conditions Wednesday, February 17, 2010

Despite the dire weather predictions the freezing level was low enough to (wet) snow instead of rain on the TOC's Avalanche Training Skills students on Saturday. The group skirted Edwards Lake and gingerly crossed the one small snow bridge over the very open creek. Companion Rescue in the afternoon took place on the heli landing pad and treed slope below Edwards cabin, with students able to come and go from the cabin to dry off and warm up. Once the day's field exercises were done torrential rain started and fell for the next 12 hours (so loud on the metal roof it drowned out the snorers). The next morning dawned dry and the group headed up to the slopes above Big Boulder Meadow below Lesser Steele. They dug giant pits and discussed terrain with the freshly corniced and wind-loaded N face of Lesser Steele hovering above under gorgeous bluebird skies that persisted for the rest of the day with only a 30 minute small hail deluge. The 12 hour downpour fell as snow at this elevation and those who opted for snowshoes instead of their backcountry ski gear regretted this small opportunity to carve some turns. But 'the chute' was difficult, as always, and below Edwards cabin the snow was crap or non-existent. Skirting Edwards Lake on the return meant snowshoeing or skinning through 6-8 inches of slush and water, with visible cracks appearing in the ice. Like fun, but different! The last km was done in boots.

The snowpack appears to be average in depth above 1400m, so Bruce's prediction about water shortages in the summer may not come to fruition. It's not unusual here for us in the lowlands to experience early spring while the snowpack continues to build in the mountains. Remember the year when a Pineapple Express wiped the entire snowpack off every mountain including Baker? The PNW still experienced an average snowpack just from the snow that fell after that from Feb-May.

Big Thanks to: the previous party at Edwards cabin for leaving it so clean and tidy: Stevie and Danny for replacing the fallen support post under Edwards cabin: Doug and Lloyd (Bachelor Cabin Sheriffs) for taking on the (mostly) thankless duty of cleaning up from A-hole partiers regularly trashing Bachelor cabin: and especially Gary Shorthouse of Canada West Mountain School for figuring out how to deliver a brilliant course despite the weirdest conditions and warmest weather here in more than 100 years.

Tet Road and TrailsTet Road and Trails
Current Conditions Thursday, February 18, 2010

The road was bare and firm last weekend, though the herringbone drainage channels make it a bit rough in places and not for a low-clearance vehicle. The lakes are not safe to cross so the Bachelor summer route should be used. Apparently the snow is very thin on that trail and difficult to ski, though snowshoeing or hiking that trail is fine. Bachelor cabin is getting low on wood so use it sparingly.

Saturday Feb. 20-
Beautiful Sunny Day on Dakota. Eastern trails were groomed for a great blue bird day. Trails are faster in the morning, and still ski worthy later- but watch for a few holes on the trail.

Snowshoeing on the upper areas of Dakota was great.

Road is clear to the parking lot- with a few muddy patches.

Edwards + SteeleEdwards + Steele
Current Conditions Sunday, February 21, 2010

Just spent four glorious days at Edwards lake cabin with a group of 10 from Victoria. No snow at the parking lot, but it starts about 300m up the hill. Hard packed until 13-1400m depending on the time of day, and melted out creeks slow down travel (lots of holes to fall into.) We crossed Edward lake on skis after another party walked across, and it felt rock solid. Use caution though. Despite avalanche hazard being high across the province, we found steele to be bombproof and we were only able to make the top 3-4' release a size 1 wet slide in one instance. Made some glorious tracks on the lesser Steele Bowl and Steele itself. Still lots of terrain left for others. Many Many thanks to TOC we were so so so impressed with the way the cabins are taken care of.

Check out old outdoor reports from as far back as Jan 2006 just go to bottom of this page many intersting stories and weather info.

If using Tet beware Lakes maybe unsafe to cross. Winter has not been all that cold and lakes maybe getting thin. Use your own judgement do not asume they are safe just because you see tracks.

Be Safe Have fun
