Road to Dakota was Blocked by stranded carRoad to Dakota was Blocked by stranded car
Saturday, December 01, 2012

A bunch of people were stuck up at Dakota ridge for sometime because of a 2 wheel drive car that ventured up there and got stuck blocking the Road. The road is Narrow and often needs 4x4 with chains on. If you get stuck you might trap other vehicles above you. ONLY 4X4S WITH CHAINS SHOULD GO UP THERE
Please use some sense when going up there it only takes 5 mins to put 1 set of chains on your front axle to give you control. You might have to stop when meeting other vehicles and not able to move again with out chains. It cost me $300 2 years ago to get a tow truck to pull me out when I got run off the road by a fast moving 4x4 with out chains. Please think of the other guy.

Is the Tet openIs the Tet open
Current Conditions Thursday, December 13, 2012

I have not seen any reports is the road plowed or when do they start plowing it. Will my golf with winter tires make it up there. Seems lots of reports about people planning to go up then you hear nothing after. Does the mountain swallow them up. Or is the Tetrahedron a big secret.
Please post some info so we can plan our trip. with those big groups claiming they were going up at least one could post some info and pictures. Even on clubtread and Facebook there is no info posted.
Maybe Santa does not want any visotors up in the Tet. Maybe the Tet is a 1 way trip?

Mt Steele tripMt Steele trip
Current Conditions Thursday, December 13, 2012

Hi All,

We had a great trip to Steele last weekend. Big thanks to Dan and Deb for the covered sleeping pads they donated last year. That was quite a bit of work for sure. Also thanks to Alex and the boys for the new vestibule and outhouse etc. Great job and more secure room for your gear.

On the trip up the lake was a bit sketchy so we went around. It's covered with snow but a bit too soft around the edges for my liking. Route around still needs a bit more snow to cover the blueberry bushes but it's OK. Once at the cabin we had to dig out a drift above the latch on the front door. Once inside it was warm and cozy in a no time.

Good coverage on top. Had a few nice turns in fresh pow then it went warm on us. We had a great ski down to Edwards Lake.

Just heard they had 14 inches snow overnight at Dakota last night. Sounds like good start to winter. Also heard lakes are not froze enough already had some close calls. Use chains on back roads even when plowed they are icey and Narrow SLOW DOWN when passing other vehicles. DON'T STOP ON ROAD

Have fun and slow down on snow covered roads.

Dakota Ridge road ice coverd chains neededDakota Ridge road ice coverd chains needed
Current Conditions Saturday, December 15, 2012

Some fool is letting his children slide down the road which is very busy. Please do not let your kids slide down the road. There is a good hill to slide on up top or on the gasline.

Tow trucks won't go up there and if by some chance you can get one to go up it will cost you over $300 for a tow out. Chains are far cheaper and safer. Slow Down use headlights watch out for others spun out on hills.

Have fun be prepared.

Lots of snow and winter conditions at Dakota Ridge this weekend. A trifle breezy in the open but stupendous in the woods. The new parking lot is a tremendous improvement (despite eejits doing doughnuts and filming themselves. I mean, really?). The start of what looks like a terrific season.

Dakota Ridge reportDakota Ridge report
Current Conditions Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Looking for possible conditions at Dakota Ridge here is our potential conditions report. 19 cm of new snow overnight -5 and snowing (This comes from Grouse Mountain). Road will be snow covered from the 2km mark. As always 4X4 and chains recommended. The shoulders are soft so only use plowed pull outs to let people pass. Carry a saw with you as there is potential blow down on the road.

Tet Lakes might not be safe to crossTet Lakes might not be safe to cross
Alert / Warning Friday, December 21, 2012

Temps are still only around -1'c or so lakes have not had good cold freeze yet. Someone has already fallen through a lake in the Caren range that had 3 ft of snow on it but they found out after there was only 1 inch of ice.

Just because you see someone elses tracks does not mean it is safe....

Dangerous to let kids slide down Dakota RoadDangerous to let kids slide down Dakota Road
Alert / Warning Monday, December 24, 2012

There are plenty of good spots off the road to let kids play on the Gasline at Lot A is good 2 sliding areas at top of Dakota behind the Warm up hut. If a vehicle with out chains comes down the road and sees kids on road and hits the brakes it could be bad. I hope you would not think about letting kids slide down Norwest Bay road just because it had snow on it.
Please let people know not to let kids play in the road. Play Safe not Foolish.

Hope you all get chains for Xmas.

Tet Road partly plowedTet Road partly plowed
Current Conditions Tuesday, December 25, 2012

Road from suicide hill to Rock Quaey is very icey Then from there up snow is more powder like and gives good traction with Chains.. Some people still trying to go up with out chains getting stuck and blocking road so hard to plow. -2'c at lot some fresh snow around 10 4x4s up there when I left. Some people up for day some couple of nights.

Please Use Chains. If you have to stop on hill with out chains you will not get going again.. Cable chains not very good up there Diamond Back or Alpine style chains are best.

Some 4x4 almost went over the bank below rock Quary. Drive slow expect to have to stop if you meet another 4x4. Speed limit has been reduced to 30 kmph on Tet road. Watch fot people walking or skiing up road as some people have parked below and walk in.

It scared me just to see his tracks. Santa hopes you all behave and use your chains and post info here.

Yes, the invincible drivers were out again. summer tires, no chains, kids sledding in the road. what can we say? maybe the Darwin theory will eventually kick in.

on a happier note, Nick and the boys went overboard fixing up the road for us yesterday-last night. today all was ploughed and pull-outs were many. here's to the road boys! thanks.

the trails had a skiff of new snow on top so classic was good and skating was a workout. now for the turkey dinner.

Snow chains easy to use and a must on DakotaSnow chains easy to use and a must on Dakota
Current Conditions Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Diamond Back or Alpine chains are fast and easy to install they cost more then crap cable chains but give much better traction and won't fly apart and take out brake lines.

CHAINS ARE A MUST FOR DAKOTA RIDGE AND THE TET. These roads always have compact ice as a base and are like driving uphill on a ice rink.

If you want to see how easy it is to install these chains Please email me I would love to help people be safer going up to out fantastic mountains.

porpoise@telus.net like i said less then 5 mins to install chains to be safer.

I thought my 4x4 pick up with studded winter tires would be no problem going up to Dakota but I ended up in the ditch when someone stopped in middle of road. If I had chains on I could have stopped and backed up the hill.

USE CHAINS PLEASE

Almost a foot of wet mushy snow. Even got stuck on a hill with 4x4 and chains, but still managed to make it up to parking lot first thing in the morning. I sure would not want to go up to Tet with out chains on saw 1 guy with cable chains spinning his wheels thought parts of chain would be flying so I got out of Dodge. On way down still saw people heading up with all season tires and no chains. I can only imagine how bad it is at Dakota with lots more traffic and fools driving to fast with no chains.
Hope the plow gets up to Tet soon. Heard he got hurt so hard to plow hope he is well soon.

Drive safe up there.

Tet road was passable but yes alpine chains a must.deep ruts
and slushy part way. whoever dug themselves out ... your shovels are still on the side of the road. People walking up the centre of the road are reminded that trucks , with chains, sliding down cannot stop and it would be best if you got out of the way, safer that way.

Gave up plowing Xmas day as to many fools with out chains were blocking the road. Will try again in Morning It is great to have reports on condtions of road and trails etc. Things like depth of snow at parking lot temps fresh snow at cabins etc.

Feel free to email me if you do not want to post porpoise@telus.net

You can post pictures. PS don't forget the TP as parks does not provide it. Colder Temps on the way.
With all the people that have been up to the Tet and only 1 person can post info that sucks.
Remember lakes might not be safe to cross as it has not been very cold. Do not assume because there are tracks it if safe Test the ice before you try it. Conditions change fast up there what is good 1 day might not be another.

Tet Road Plowed for 4x4 with ChainsTet Road Plowed for 4x4 with Chains
Current Conditions Sunday, December 30, 2012

Some people refusing to use chains were sliding down hill or getting stuck in pullouts. Temp was -6'c this morning lots of 4x4s up there some for day some already heading in for New years. Please spread your tracks out put your 4x4 into four wheel drive as soon as you leave the Pavement. Some people think it is only for when you get stuck. 2 wheel drive tends to spin wheels a bit and tear up the gravel. It was snowing heavy from Suicide hill to Bridge at 3pm. Take shovels you might need to dig a parking spot back up well off the road.

Many thanks to all the people who have been chaining up and trying to spread there tracks out it makes plowing much easier.
