Dakota Ridge roadDakota Ridge road
Alert / Warning Sunday, December 01, 2013

Only 4x4 or all wheel drive vehicles should use the Dakota road in winter. Conditions change fast and even though the road is plowed it can be very icey. Using chains will make your drive up and down much safer. Cable chains are not much help on steep mountain roads. Alpine Chains are the best and very fast and easy to install. 1 set on front drive wheels will give you steering and good braking.
It only takes 1 car to block the road for many others. The road is not Sanded and traction often very poor. PLEASE USE CHAINS and slow down when you see oncoming traffic. Road is often to narrow for 2 cars to pass safely at 30kmph.

Alert / Warning Friday, December 06, 2013

Are there plans to have any else plow or are we going to have to rough it. It has been great having it ploughed for so many years. It was nice having it ploughed everytime we went up. Who pays to plough the road do they put it up for Bids like Dakota road. All the best to him he pulled me out several times and showed me how to put on my chains proplerly. We will miss the Snow Eater. Hope the next guy is as good.

There is only a trace of snow up there as it has been cold and dry, The road has many rough spots and water bars above lot A. or around 8 km and up. Watch for Logging trucks as the road is narrow in spots and Logging trucks need the whole road. Gate is locked and not enough snow to play yet. Have fun and do the Snow dance.

Tips for driving back roads in winterTips for driving back roads in winter
Current Conditions Monday, December 16, 2013

Yes CHAINS are best 1 set of chains on front drive wheels will give you steering and Braking. Use low gears and speed. When seeing oncoming traffic SLOW down and pass slowly. Roads are not wide enough to pass at driving speeds. And shoulders often get very soft in winter months and will give out.
It is often nice to stop and chat with other drivers to let them know how the road is or they can let you know. Watch for People walking there dogs or Bike riding etc. Some roads might have horse back riders. Do not think you are the only one on the road share it .

ONLY 4X4 OR ALL WHEEL DRIVES should go on snow covered back roads and USE CHAINS

Tet snow , rainy snowTet snow , rainy snow
Current Conditions Friday, December 20, 2013

As of Friday Dec 20 the road is passable to km 18 in a decent 4x4 . Some of the best climbing ice I have seen in years is on the back of Rainy mt. There is about 8 inches at the lake 7 dam. 2-3 feet of snow at the top of Rainy mountain , depth varies because of wind blow, would be real tough to ski. Pretty sweet out there this year.
Trees are breaking with the wind and snow load, a bit of caution would be a good idea.

Chains a must on roads to Dakota and TetChains a must on roads to Dakota and Tet
Alert / Warning Friday, December 20, 2013

I hate putting chains on as much as anyone. On a mid week day I was going up to Dakota to help groom trails. When I was coming down with studded winter tires 4x4 and a snow mobile in the back as weight I ended up in the Ditch. I was coming down the road in 8 inches of fresh snow down a small hill when I saw a Van stopped in the middle of the road. When I tried to slow down my wheels locked up so I had to try to go around him and I ended up in the ditch. If I had not been so lazy and put 1 set of chains on I could have stopped. You can not know what others are going to do on that road. You have to be able to stop and be able to go up a hill from a dead stop.
The only 1 to blame was me even with the van driver stopped in the middle of the road I was stupid not to use chains. Here is a pic of my truck almost flipped it in the ditch at 7km where the big culvert goes under the road.
Please use chains..

Alert / Warning Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Dakota Ridge will open Dec 24.

Sechelt and Squamish mains (trails) will be open for skiing...
For now snowshoeing can be done on any of the cross country trails which are not yet open. When we get a meter of snow then we’ll open the snowshoe trails.
Sledding will be open too.
And, of course, your beautifully remodeled Chalet (Warming Hut) will be open, with a warm cozy fire going inside.
Road is very icy - please use 4x4 and be prepared with chains.

On way down from Dakota I had to pull out someone who got stuck because they did not put chains on and could not stop. Glad I put chains on and had a tow rope or we would still be up there as he blocked the road.

Alert / Warning Monday, December 30, 2013

This year a plow will only be called in when needed so if there is no info on snow and road conditions it may affect the road etc. Things like snow depth and new snow temps etc all help people plan trips etc. Things like chaining up and spreading out your tracks will help keep the road open longer. Have fun enjoy the outdoors. do the snow dance

Bachelor/Tet RoadBachelor/Tet Road
Current Conditions Tuesday, December 31, 2013

We just came down from a great night at Bachelor cabin. The road up to the Tet is bare until just a few km before the parking lot when it ices up. The parking lot is a skating rink.
The trail to Bachelor is packed snow with extremely icy sections. Snow shoes wouldn't help, but those ice clamps that will snap on to your boots would!
Met some folks heading up to Edwards.
Happy New Year all!
