Tet Road wet and slushyTet Road wet and slushy
Current Conditions Friday, March 01, 2013

Tried to get up with my Van to check road even with 4 chains on no luck very slushy and hard ice under slush. Have to do repairs to plow and hope to have running for sat am. If I do go up and plow you can check on facebook under Tetrahedron road info. I will send info from up top. But with heavy rain it looks messy and wet. It is like driving in wet conctrete with ice under it. Several times there was large snow wheel blocks. My automatic just thought the brakes were on and would not go forward anymore.
Even if I can scrap it down chains will be needed as thick hard ice under slush for last 2 kms. Take shovels you might have to dig a parking spot road is narrow and snow banks high be prepared to back up to let others pass etc.

Tet Road and school groupsTet Road and school groups
Current Conditions Wednesday, March 06, 2013

Please make sure you use a suitable 4 wheel drive vehicle to get kids up the road. In years past we have seen a school bus with chains on stuck on the hill and other year two 15 passenger 2 wheel drive vans with chains on that got stuck then turned around and parked partly blocking the road. NO 2 WHEEL DRIVES SHOULD travel past the bridge area.

Current Conditions Thursday, March 07, 2013

It is great people post info about there plans to go up to cabins etc but please post info after your trip also. This helps others plan etc like maybe taking mouse traps. If they saw 6 mice there is more like 20 or so.
Hope to plow road fri or sat. Snow on road is like sand no traction and ruts are deep so Hope the plow can push downhill and make it better.
Take care have fun.

Tet road plowed 0Tet road plowed 0'c at lot no new snow
Current Conditions Friday, March 08, 2013

Tried to widen the road and scrape out the ruts PLEASE USE CHAINS ANS SPREAD TRACKS OUT it will keep the road in better shape longer. was down to -5'c overnight at the lot. From what I hear the firewood is getting very low at Bachelor cabin and Mice have invaded the Edwards cabin too. Also had 2 mice in the plow this morning.
Try to spread your tracks out on the gravel portion of the road also this will help stop water running down the road and wrecking the road or making soft spots as frost comes out.
Lakes are starting to show some open water around the shoreline in spots so use your own judgement do not think the tracks you see on lake are fresh or safe. Have fun play safe.

Current Conditions Sunday, March 10, 2013

to the Post that says Cabin Booked, you can't book these cabins it's 1st come 1 st serve and anyone can stay, if there is not enough floor space they can pitch a tent and use the cabin. It's great that people post their intentions to go into the back country and stay at one of the 4 cabins but you can't reserve them. Read the cabin policy on TetOutdoor club website.

Thanks For Posting Cabin Stay IntentionsThanks For Posting Cabin Stay Intentions
Alert / Warning Friday, March 15, 2013

It's GREAT that cabin visitors are using this space to announce their intentions! No, it doesn't mean a reservation but it lets others make plans. The cabins have been well-used this season, and generally treated very well. This is a great relief to the TOC! Lots of time and $$ go into these cabins so thanks to all visitors who have done their part and held up their end of the 'user-maintained' agreement. AND THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE PAID THEIR CABIN FEES!!

Visitors - if you really want to feel like you are entitled to your floorspace in a cabin you can PAY YOUR CABIN FEES AHEAD OF TIME through the club's website Print your receipt and carry it with you. One day soon the most popular cabins will have a reservation system so we should all get used to the process. Also, cabin fees will be going up next year, particularly for winter use.

Please notify the TOC if you find any problems at a cabin or have any comments.

Tetrahedron UpdateTetrahedron Update
Current Conditions Saturday, March 23, 2013

We drove up to Tetrahedron on March 21, and came out on Friday March 22. The road was excellent except for the last km to the winter parking lot. There were very deep ruts in aged snow. Ruts about 10' deep slowed our vehicle with its 8' of clearance. Even with chains on the front, it was very difficult to keep out of the ruts going up. We were able to drive outside the ruts coming down, and others had done that also. The snow is soft enough that it should be plowable.

A further refinement for spreading vehicle tracks, is that the first vehicle up in fresh snow should drive a foot or two off-center, making it easier for the next vehicle to have room to stay out of their tracks.

Besides our group at Steele, there had been a group of 3 at Steele on March 19 and 20, and 4 at Edwards on March 21. Firewood looks good at Steele. We took the Gibson Lake route, and it was in nice shape. Lakes are well covered except extremely close to outlets and inlets.

And a suggestion for the lack of space climbing the ladder through the loft floor, is that the ladders could be rearranged so the rungs (well secured of course) are on the bottom of the ladder, not the top. This would add at least 4' of clearance.

Photo is from the dam at the east end of Edwards Lake, looking west.

Trip to EdwardsTrip to Edwards
Current Conditions Monday, March 25, 2013

Went into Edwards cabin on March 23rd. The road was icy and rutty for only the last 400 meters or so with five cars parked at the bottom gate around 11AM. Most people were heading up to Steele with no tracks into Bachelor cabin noticed. Snow shoed in were there was a 1” layer of fresh snow on top and a hard icy crusty layer underneath most of the way. The snowshoe trail has become deep and narrow and has become difficult for wide snow shoes!!! As most others this weekend, we crossed Edwards Lake with no problems. The lake has a foot of compact snow on top, then 3 foot of slush, then solid ice around four feet down. We were unable to measure how thick the ice was though. I should imagine the slush will come through the surface pretty soon with temperatures rising this week. The cabin was left clean and there is still heaps of firewood. The cabin looked great with new windows and upgrades done over summer. There a couple of snow caves around the cabin that are worth climbing into and realizing the effort taken to create such voids in the snow. Thanks again to the TOC for having a great recreation area to explore.

Current Conditions Wednesday, March 27, 2013

Temps as high as +10'c or more in daytime Lakes in Tet could be getting soft and unsafe to cross. Use your own judgement do not think it is safe just because you see tracks. Some reports on face book say lots new snow a steele and outhouse was buried in snow.
Please post info if you have been up.

Mt. Steele OuthouseMt. Steele Outhouse
Current Conditions Wednesday, March 27, 2013

I gather the Mt. Steele Cabin outhouse has been moved or replaced in the last year or so. It now sits lower and in a snow accumulation zone. As of the 23rd, the surrounding snow was level with the top of its roof, which makes it a bit of a chore to shovel snow up out of the hole, and to maintain steps so you don't fall to the bottom. A really heavy snow year would make it quite a problem, and a lackadaisical party arriving after a heavy snowfall might be tempted to not bother using the outhouse.

YesterdayYesterday's conditions
Current Conditions Friday, March 29, 2013

We had a group of 16 (elementary school group) in to Bachelor Lake on Wednesday and Thursday and conditions were perfect. We dug a hole on Tannis Lake to check the ice (take care of the open water near the creek when entering from the bridge). There were a couple of feet of snow, a foot of slush and at least three inches of ice (we stopped chipping with the (PHOTO 1) hatchet at that point). There is ample wood at Bachelor. We dug the snow down to the cabin windows so now there is lots of night. We also leveled the path to the outhouse (the snow is covering all but the last three steps. There was no paper in the outhouse - we left a roll in the cabin. We found the cabin in good condition and everything was in good order. I hope others feel we left it in similar condition.

Yesterday at noon, the snow at the Branch 500 parking lot/trailhead was warming and 'greasy' (PHOTO 2): the top six inches of snow was very soft and would easily be ploughed. For those ascending to Branch 500 today, the road is clear gravel to the Mt Crucil turn-off (PHOTO 3) but quickly turns to snow and while our three vehicles tried to flatten the ruts on the way down yesterday, there were times when we were still drawn into deep ruts in the warming noon snow. The warming trend forecasted for this weekend could make the last 1.5 km of the road difficult to transit. The parking lot had lots of cleared space if folks park judiciously.

Thanks Snow Man and others for the great reports. Our group will be in for a second trip to Bachelor on April 4-5. Happy Easter!
