Trail Conditions for hike to Mt. Steele Current Conditions Monday, July 01, 2013
Hiked up to the summit of Steele on Saturday June 29 th. The bridge over Steele creek still seems to be washed out as I did not see anything that resembled a bridge at the point where we crossed. There was however a fallen tree that was rather large that bridged the gap for the sure footed, well balanced outdoors person to walk across. It was not really that much of an issue anyways as the creek was maybe only calf height deep, although running fast and I would imagine ice cold.
As you get past Edwards Cabin on your way up to Mt. Steele you will hit snow. The snow is packed dense and wet with ridges and divets everywhere. Depth probably ranges from a foot to 3 ft. deep in spots. We had rented snowshoes just in case and I'm glad we did, as the added traction made for a more pleasant hike with less swearing?:) If you decided to opt out of snowshoes you would still be able to navigate on top of the snow as it is so dense and hard in most spots. Just be wary it is also very slippery. If you are wearing decent hiking boots you should be able to kick in easily enough through the crust to get a good enough foot hold to get past the steeper inclines. It is a toss up as to if the snowshoes added time and physical effort or not. I would recommend having them this time of year at the higher altitudes if not just for better traction.
If you are packing light and planning on filtering water along the way, I would recommend filling up your bottle or bladder at Steele Creek as you will have to melt snow for drinking at the higher elevations.
Be prepared to get wet muddy feet on the trails in the lower elevations coming and going to and from Edwards Cabin as many parts of the trail have become miny muddy streams from the melt water. All in all a pleasant early summer hike. The summit was warm around 21 degrees Celsius with snow everywhere. Beautiful and well worth it. Happy and safe hiking to you all. -Andy & Jess. Scout Hike Current Conditions Tuesday, July 09, 2013
1st Gibsons Scouts were in the Tetrahedron July 3-6. We spent the first night at Bachelor Lake and the next 2 at Edwards. Both the cabins were in good condition and found clean. When we left Bachelor Cabin, we took a trail from the outhouse up the hill to the old logging road, turned left and got to Victor's Landing where we continued on the trail to Edwards. (We had checked out the route the night before). We did a day hike to Mt Steele. There is snow from about half way up. The trail was quite dry in most places. We had a great trip.
