We stayed at Edwards Cabin this weekend. The road was easily passable without chains. There was about 6 inches of fresh snow on top of a hard pack. It was a great weekend. Thank you to all those who put so much into Tetrahedron park and the cabins.

Snowshoed Ridge walker on Saturday. The trail is marked with pink ribbon with about 2 inches of new snow on top of an icy base on the east side of the trail. However, when you reach the west side of the trail the snow dissapears under the trees. I would suggest you walk the trail until the second pond and turn back. This will give you a aproxiamately a 5KM walk if you start from the warming hut. Enjoy the sunshine

Little iced up from top of the rock Quary. If you drive out of the ruts you gets some traction. Some one in a 2 wheel drive must have been spinning all the way up at top.. Was -10'c at the lot only 1-2 inches new snow there since last week. Went for a bit of a hike but was very cold. 1 SUV in the lot must have been up overnight. Lots of tire tracks road is getting packed down better driving then last week.

Frozen solidFrozen solid
Current Conditions Sunday, February 09, 2014

The Grey Creek road is bare to the last .5km then its a little bit icy - frozen solid actually. Better take the chains just to get down safely. Good but solid skiing into Bachelor and Edwards.
No new snow. A couple of inches of softer stuff on top of 12' boiler plate. Lots of blueberry bushes protruding. Many cross ditches open and running. Lakes all solid. Lots of firewood at Bachelor still.
Ptarmigan running around near Victor's Landing.

Did you loose a chain on the Dakota Road last winter. I found one in the summer. Blue with a small piece of red on the ring. There is a rubber bungee with it. You can call Mr. Mender 885 8815 for details or stop by to look.

Current Conditions Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Made it up from Port Mellon via Mc Nair Creek FSR last Friday, came down Monday. We cycled, but road is in drivable condition up to the dam for 4 WD HC. On the way down a couple of boulders with up to 50 cm diameter tumbled across the road (around km 2 ?).

Between the washout and the Lower McNair Lake somebody brushed most of the alder, chainsawed logs up to 40 cm in diameter and added some trail markers last summer, makes access a lot easier, thank you very much.

Up at Steele there were still 5 to 10 cm of powdery snow on top of a in-penetrable icy snow pack on Sunday. All icy on sunny aspects. We carried up the 2 remaining green seat cushions from Edwards to Steele as requested. Forgot a synthetic Vaude jacket at Edwards or Steele cabin, if found please email frank dot zimmermann at gmx dot net.

We woke up to 10 cm of new kind of heavy moist snow on Monday morning at McNair cabin, which made skinning a slog. The lose snow sits on an icy layer/surface hoar and hasn't bonded yet. We avoided the icy creek crossing on the way down by getting on the left hand slope from McNair Lake.

There was snow all the way down to the highway at Port Mellon, but it was raining in the afternoon. Previously icy water-bars were now slushy. Snow-pack is not thick enough to ski down the logging road, there is no base and rocks and branches are scratching the skis.

School Group in the Tet (March 3-6)School Group in the Tet (March 3-6)
Current Conditions Wednesday, February 19, 2014

The Take a Hike Program from Vancouver will be in the Tet from Monday, March 3rd until the morning of Thursday, March 6th. We will have 11 students and 3 staff. The night of the 3rd we will be at Bachelor cabin and the 4th and 5th we will be at Edwards. The students are grade 11-12. It is a quite energetic group and so if you are planning a romantic week up at the Tet might be best to plan your route so we do not overlap. Love this area and our students always have a great time. Thanks to all those who put so much effort into maintaining the cabins and road. We had a fantastic time in January and are looking forward to another great trip in March!

Tet Road not drivable past quarry as of WednesdayTet Road not drivable past quarry as of Wednesday
Current Conditions Thursday, February 20, 2014

Access to the Tet doesn't look good for this weekend as snow makes the road impassable about 7km from the lower lot at 700m elevation. Even if by some miracle the road was to be ploughed Friday folks should be very cautious of travel to Mt. Steele. Avalanche potential is considerable in that area!

Current Conditions Friday, February 21, 2014

Looks like we're heading up there this weekend anyways, plowed or unplowed, regardless of the 9 extra km to snowshoe, haha. There are 4 of us heading up late morning or midday Friday, so there will be a packed snowshoe trail for anyone else following us.

Conditions as of Sun Feb 23Conditions as of Sun Feb 23
Current Conditions Sunday, February 23, 2014

Just got back from 2 nights at Edwards Cabin. No idea how much snow in total is up there, but there is lots, and we got over a foot of fluffy powder on Saturday and Sunday. Lots of people up there. There was a crew of 2 and another of 5 that came in Friday night and then went to Steele the next morning, and a crew of three that came in Saturday night to Edwards. We snowshoed to McNair and back on out middle day. Driving up on friday we didn't hit snow until after the first set of steep hills, and made it to within 2 km of the lower parking lot in our Pathfinder (with chains). Couldn't make it up the steep section before the area with the boulders on the right side of the road (assumed the quarry, but this was pretty high up). There was a truck parked about a km further up from us (1km from the lower lot). On the way down today there was snow all the way down to the very bottom. Lots of new snow. Really slippery. Went really slow and tried to drive out of the ruts to pack it down, but got sucked around by the fresh snow and almost went off the edge of the road once (even going super slow). No choice but to stay in the ruts (sorry Cavin) Saw 3 big trucks not too far up from the bottom. They had parked and passed us further up on snowmobiles. Looked like they had tried to get up the lower steep section, but couldn't do it. No idea if they had chains. I would say at this point it's probably pretty tough going even on the lower steep section potentially even with chains until that snow settles or melts. Awesome weekend though, and great cabins!!!

Tet road etc lots of snowTet road etc lots of snow
Current Conditions Monday, February 24, 2014

Search and rescue had to go out for some people on sunday not sure of details but no doubt all this new snow makes things hard to find your way out. Be prepared. The road now has lots of snow on it and the ruts are hard to get out of. Be prepared have and use chains, carry shovels and tow rope. You never know when you or someone else might need a pull out if possible.
It is easy to get lost when trails are coverd in snow mins after you go in. Poor vis and heavy snow makes it easy to get lost. Just because there was a good trail to follow going in does not mean it will be there on way out. It could snow 2-3 ft overnight. Have fun stay safe

Top of treeline Snowpit near Steele cabinTop of treeline Snowpit near Steele cabin
Current Conditions Monday, February 24, 2014

Hopefully these observations help any backcountry users out there:

Snowpack on Feb 22: We dug a snow pit up at the top of tree line near Steele. The new storm layer was light and dry but was reactive and sluffing at about 30 cm on steeper terrain. No pops or whumfs were observed. Lower to mid snowpack was well settled although we did notice a slight crust layer around 1.5 meters. The deeper layer was non-reactive with compression tests. The new snow did not let up over the weekend so the biggest concern would be the increasing storm layer on the surface needing some time to settle out. Avoided open terrain and convex rolls. Amazing skiing in the trees around Steele. Super impressed!!

Plans to plough the access road to Tetrahedron Park have been made and more info will be posted here as soon as it is available. The ploughing is no longer being done by a generous volunteer and so will cost the TOC big $$. Please pay your cabin fees and consider making a donation toward the ploughing costs. Payments can be made through the website (membership & cabin payments page) or by stuffing $$ in our dropbox at the Wilson Creek Shell station.

Thanks very much to all who have posted reports and paid their fees!
