Dakota Good for BackcountryCurrent Conditions Wednesday, December 16, 2015Was up at Dakota for a morning backcountry ski this Wed Dec 16th. Spent a couple of hours going to the far lakes. Followed the standard hemlock route going out but was able to bushwhacked back - follow about 180 degrees on the compass seeing ribbons occasionally. Was about 1 meter of hard base with about 4 inches of powder on top making travel everywhere possible. Skied out with skins and back without - blue wax conditions.
Road was in good conditions as it was newly plowed almost to gravel. I don't mind navigating by compass and GPS but for those not comfortable the trail out and back was sketchy. Did not see any trail markers on trees but saw ribbons going out.

Tet road ploughingCurrent Conditions Tuesday, December 22, 2015The Tet road has nothing to do with Scrd the guy that use to plough the road stopped after a tragic thing happened on a Mof road. He told me he had been run off the road a dozen or more times by fools driving to fast. He was concerned someone might get killed like on the mine road. How could people drive so crazy driving others off the road. Or worse. If people used chains and spread there tracks out ploughing would not be neede as often. But 50 people will drive up in the same ruts as last 50 4x4s. Tet club will try to have road ploughed at great exspence.

Fun in the snowCurrent Conditions Wednesday, December 23, 2015Although I won't be able to post until after new years unless cell service is better than past years, I'll let you know.
I'm the guy going up in the group of 8 to Edwards on Dec 31st. We're in a big lifted Nissan frontier and half the fun of getting there is cruising through the snow so I'll see how wide I can make those ruts for you all...
I'm pretty sure that the club is also still taking donations by PayPal so we'll be covering that as well as we always do.
Enjoy the snow people, just watch out for the higher avalanche risk.

Best chains for Tet or DakotaCurrent Conditions Wednesday, December 23, 2015Diamond back chains are the best chains to use fast and easy to put on with out having to move your car. They stay tight and are great for vehicles with little clearance. You also do not get the bumpy ride as chains are always under tires. Unlike old style ladder chains. I have used these to plow snow with no extra links to flap around here is a Pic

Tet. My Steele heard 10ft of snow up thereCurrent Conditions Thursday, December 24, 20153 ft of snow at lot this morning road is a mess trees and limbs everywhere was ploughing snow with front bumper dragging snow under body of suv had chains on front. 2 tire ruts hard to get out of glad never met any on oncoming traffic we would have got stuck. Wish I had bought 2 sets of chains. If you do not have high clearance and don't have chains don't go past Quary hill. Had snow going in rad and over headlights. What happened to the plough

Tet road deep snowAlert / Warning Friday, December 25, 2015If you plan on driving the road to the Tet please be prepared for deep snow. Carry and use chains have shovels and tow strap. Have a hand saw to deal with limbs etc over hanging road. Spread your tracks out to widen the road out. Today there was just 1 set of tracks many 4x4s drove on so road was only 1 groove in the snow hard to get out of. Many people just drove around limbs on the road instead of stopping and moving them to make it safe for others. At this rate the road will be undriveable shortly. If people do not try to spread there tracks out the road will be snowed in and shut down.

Great skating all around the upper plateau area as no overnight snow on the grooming from yesterday. More on Tire ChainsCurrent Conditions Friday, December 25, 2015To add to Snowman's endorsement of the diamond pattern chains...
The pattern means you have links on the snow most of the time, unlike old fashioned chains that only have chain on the ground when crosslinks are under the tire. So traction is more continuous. This even makes a bigger difference when braking, as the old chains will bite and rotate the crosslink off the road, then slide on the bare tire.
The diamond chains are lighter and don't rust like the old chains. You can mount and dismount them without crawling under the vehicle. Well worth the extra expense.
They can be tricky to mount on winter tires with large soft tread blocks as the links get caught on the tread blocks. A great aid to putting them on, or any other chains, is to bring a couple of blocks of 2x4 the same length as the width of the tire, and park with the tires on top of the blocks.

More on tire chainsCurrent Conditions Saturday, December 26, 2015I just wanted to add to the tire chains blurb . I use a gardeners hand trowel to dig away snow from the front and back of the tire underneath , this really helps getting the chains together and tighter right away, just drop one into the chain bag.
Diamond back chains are the only way to go if you are buying chains

Road to Tet park.Alert / Warning Saturday, December 26, 2015The road is getting very soft in afternoon on top of deep. Compacted ruts if you get off the ruts you are stuck. I would not drive past the Quary it gets deep and soft fast. Why does the RD not plough the road like Dakota. It is the road to the park and our water shed. Maybe community forest would help pay to plow the road. It is a logging road with recreational use it should be plowed. It was for years what changed. Justin won't plough our roads now.

Tet road Suicide hill was shear iceAlert / Warning Saturday, December 26, 2015A guy in pick up truck was spinning out the. Slidding backwards on the hill he managed to catch some gravel on the shoulder which spun his truck around in a split second. He almost lost his truck. The back roads co ft ion changes fast. Why risk it put chains on.

No chains is just dumbAlert / Warning Saturday, December 26, 2015Many people thought they were smart today and made it up to Dakota Ridge without chains. Those people are still being shuttled off the mountain via atv and volunteers with chains
and it is 10.30 pm. Yes - you may get up without chains but you can't get down. You will lose control on corners, ditch your vehicle or block the road, and make it impassable for those behind you.
Please, please, don't go up without chains.
You may be up there at 10.30pm, walking down in the cold and the snow.
Many many thanks to Steve, Colwyn, Bruce, Michel and Loraine who volunteered to bail out those who didn't plan ahead.

Tet s snow deep and softAlert / Warning Monday, December 28, 2015Just heard from a group from Steele. Took 11 hours to get there as snow so deep. If you are going in plan for 2 times the amount of time to get in do not start in afternoon. It will be a real work out

Dakot ridge still should use chainsAlert / Warning Monday, December 28, 2015Road still. Compact ice. For safety sake use chains. Road is narrow you might have to stop on a hill to let others pass. Or someone might be stopped in the mide of road chains are the safest answer. I went up 1 day with studded winter tires on 4x4 truck with weight in back. I ended up in ditch cause someone stopped in middle of road. You never know what is going to happen up there please use chains. Could save a life

Please remove stuff of backroadsAlert / Warning Monday, December 28, 2015If you see branches etc on the road do not drive over or around them stop and clear them of the road. As if they get covered in snow they can jill poke a radiator or worse a windshield. A 1 inch branch could kill someone. If you have a saw and cut a tree remove the entire thing off the road as trees left on the road could get covered in snow and cause damage later. I got a tree limb through my windshield years ago after someone failed to remove the entire limb. Think of overs do not just drive over crisp on road make it safe for all.
